Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT CAN I EXPECT?
When you contact me to schedule your first appointment, I will email paperwork to you. Please bring these to our first meeting. If email is not convenient for you, the paperwork can be completed during your first visit.
These forms include a place to list your goals and reasons for coming to therapy. It is okay if you are not clear about your goals. We can discuss this further when we meet.
There are different purposes for seeking counseling. One purpose is to change something in your life or behavior that is causing problems. Another reason for counseling is for emotional & psychological support as you struggle with a distressing situation. Others seek counseling for a professional's perspective on a life challenge. The type of therapeutic intervention that we will utilize will depend on your goals and needs. We will work together to determine what may be most helpful.
WHAT IS MY "STYLE" AS A THERAPIST?
I hold a deep level of respect for each individual. Life experience teaches me that "walking a mile" in someone else's shoes through hearing stories of struggle creates understanding rather than judgment. You can expect me to listen to you carefully, keeping in mind your goals and how I can assist you in reaching them.
With your goals in mind, I offer direct, forthright feedback. Often, I offer homework to assist you in your work toward healing and change.
IS THERE ANY GUARANTEE OR ASSURANCE THAT THERAPY WILL WORK FOR ME?
Each individual is unique. Life circumstances change. Personal growth and change are an individual process impacted by many factors. No therapist can guarantee results with therapy. It is my sincere desire to assist you effectively.
DO YOU HAVE EVENING AND WEEKEND HOURS?
Yes, I see clients Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. - 7 p.m and Fridays from 9-1.
Please call for availability of appointment times.
HOW LONG IS EACH COUNSELING SESSION?
Each therapy session is 55 minutes.
WHAT IS THE COST PER SESSION?
The cost per individual session is $195. Couples and family sessions are $225. Additional charges apply if our time extends beyond 60 minutes.
WHAT HAPPENS IN A COUNSELING SESSION?
The early part of therapy will focus on identifying what you want to move toward & accomplish through the counseling process. It is okay if you do not know what that is in the beginning. We will talk about your strengths & explore your thoughts, beliefs, & behaviors that influence your life.
DO YOU JUST LISTEN OR DO YOU HELP GUIDE ME?
I do both. We begin each session by checking in with you on current concerns. Each session is an interactive process that includes active listening, sharing, clarification, questions, and other appropriate therapeutic activities.
HOW OFTEN WILL WE MEET?
That depends on your needs and goals. Most clients meet with me on a weekly basis as we work together to identify options for personal growth and self-understanding.
HOW LONG WILL I BE IN COUNSELING?
The length of counseling depends on your specific concerns. Some individuals and couples meet their goals in 5-8 sessions while others spend 10-15 sessions. Other clients desire long-term counseling to resolve more complicated issues. I will make recommendations. However, you are in charge of when to start and when to end counseling.
HOW ARE INSURANCE COVERAGE AND PAYMENT ARRANGED?
Payment is due at the time of service. Insurance policies vary. We will discuss the insurance coverage possibilities for you. If you seek insurance coverage, I will provide you with a receipt for you to send to your insurance company.
WHAT TYPES OF THERAPIES DO YOU OFFER?
I utilize a variety of therapies, depending on the needs of each client. CBT, DBT, EMDR, ACT, and active nonjudgmental listening (Rogerian) are among my favored approaches to assist.
